Honolulu is implementing a new waste management system starting April 2025, allowing residents to dispose of food waste and compostable materials in their green bins along with grass trimmings, leaves, and branches. Mayor Rick Blangiardi signed Bill 47, expanding recyclables to include take-out containers, utensils, and food scraps. This move aims to reduce landfill waste, promoting a circular economy and enhancing soil quality. Until the ordinance takes effect, only green waste is permitted in the green bins. The initiative reflects a proactive approach by the city towards sustainable waste management.
