A recent study by Kerry Group shows that “one-third of consumers are willing to switch to brands or products that offer better shelf life.” The majority of those surveyed for the study were trying to reduce food waste. The food industry has a good opportunity to capitalize on consumers’ changing taste towards reducing food waste by creating or changing products that contribute to minimizing or preventing waste. Things such as extending shelf lives for products is an example. Consumers should look for new ways companies may be processing their products to reduce food waste and extend shelf life such as drying, freezing, or pickling food.
