A San Diego initiative is working to fight two major issues the city faces; homelessness and food waste. Homeless community members are trained on how to recover and disperse food that would otherwise have been wasted and are later hired to help distribute the food to those in need. Some members of the program are not only hired but also housed. For many people, this program has helped turn their lives around with some citing the program as the reason they recovered from substance use and mental health issues. All of this while simultaneously helping to save and distribute 500,000 lbs of food back to the homeless community in need.
