A Rhode Island state representative proposed a bill after seeing large amounts of leftover food from her son’s wedding go to waste. The bill, called the Organics Diversion at Catered Events Act, would require catered events with 50 or more meals to create food waste reduction plans and use composting or donation services. It would also require caterers to submit these plans for approval and work with a composting provider, and businesses that do not follow these rules could face up to a $500 fine. The goal of this bill is to ensure that edible food is not thrown away and instead is reused or properly managed. Catered events often produce a lot of unnecessary waste that could be avoided, especially since thousands of tons of food waste already end up in landfills each year.
