Baltimore schools are implementing the Baltimore Food Waste and Recovery Strategy, a plan to help public schools divert food waste (and other waste) from landfills by 2040. One of the several goals of this project is to educate students on where the food comes from, how it is collected, and why it is important to not waste it. The school system also made several financial investments into this project, including fridges and freezers that are better equipped to store food. The author notes several instances that are unique to children, and how addressing those can reduce food waste. Children are particularly picky eaters, so creating a healthy relationship to fruits and vegetables will help them reduce waste in the long term. An important note about this article is how holistic it is: it addresses root issues with children and food waste, and seeks to change them from the ground up with education, advocacy and practice.
