Composting is one of the easiest and most effective ways to alleviate food waste. Many cities now have compost collection programs that take food that would end up in a landfill and instead it is composted and turned to fertilizer. The actual process of composting involves first a six week period where waste decomposes, followed by a nine month period where waste is further broken down before being turned into fertilizer.
