Mulhouse, a town in eastern France, has come up with a solution to repurpose an abundance of stale bread. What once was being used to feed the local birds ended up causing a rat problem, so the neighborhood now has bins designated to bread collection. The collected bread, that would otherwise be thrown out or fed to the birds is now being used to make energy and fertilizer. Anerobic processes are used to break down the bread to create gas, electricity, and fertilizer. Although it is a small-scale system, the Mulhouse community in France has plans to expand their bread collection to neighboring communities.
