Each year, college campuses around the United States collectively waste 22 million pounds of food. At the University of Pittsburgh, a group referred to as the “Food Recovery Heroes” are aiming to alleviate some of the impact. The organization has been going to local events to gather uneaten items and repurpose them to hunger-fighting groups. Though COVID placed a damper on their efforts, membership and activity is resurfacing. Hopefully the Pennsylvania-based initiative sets an example that gathers a rapid following.
