For perishable foods in transit, there is often a short window for error in estimation.  Seeing a market for data analytics here, Ericsson and DeltaTrack seek to place sensors in the shipping containers at the different stages of transport to monitor humidity, temperature, detection of gasses from ripening, etc.  For international bound goods, opening containers, breaking the seal for inspection based on some of these factors.  By being able to track and make available this data, they can prevent advance expiration or prolong the amount of slack available before the next phase of the supply chain.
