Tyler Heppell, the Production Manager at Heppell Farms, sheds light on an ongoing challenge—many consumers struggle to afford fresh fruits and vegetables, despite approximately 30% of fresh produce going to waste due to cosmetic imperfections. To address this issue, Heppell Farms initiated an annual event where they generously distribute imperfect produce to the community. This impactful initiative has inspired fellow farmers in British Columbia, resulting in a nationwide event set for October 14th. The proactive response to food waste and the enhancement of food security received praise from British Columbia’s Agriculture Minister, Pam Alexis, who made the comment, “Just because something doesn’t look pretty doesn’t mean it is not nutritious.”
