The use of various phrases like “Sell By,” “Expires On,” and “Freshest Before” makes it difficult for people to understand what to do with their food. People do not want to throw away food that is still good to eat, but they also do not want to feed their families food that will make them sick. On July 1, 2026, the phrase “sell by” will be banned from product labels in the state of California in order to help stop the confusion that customers have about when food should be thrown away. Californians throw away 6 million tons of food waste each year, and the issue of product labels is one of the main reasons why. Once the ban starts, all product labels must use the phrase “Best If Used By” to communicate quality and “Use By” to show product safety. It will be the first of its kind put into effect in the United States. An additional benefit of this ban is that the average American will save money on his or her groceries because the average person spends over $1,000 on uneaten food.
