Phoenix, Arizona is working with Mill, a national company that sells food recycling systems, and R. City, a local service that collects waste and uses it as compost on Valley farms to reduce food waste. Mill creates smart trash bins that shrink food scraps and leftovers that are tossed in them by 80% in volume without forming an odor. The city is placing these special bins in employee breakrooms in City Hall. R. City then collects the waste gathered in the bins and repurposes it as compost. Since January, 25 of these bins have been placed in two city buildings. Within a week, 645 pounds of food had been diverted. The program is available to residents for around $35 each month, and the city is also selling composting bins made from old garbage cans at Phoenix transfer stations to anyone who wants to compost at home.
