The Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy (EGLE) has awarded $5.6 million in Circular Economy Grants through the NextCycle Michigan program to support recycling and the development of circular supply chains. The grants, ranging from $50,000 to $250,000, will fund projects that focus on material reuse, recycling, composting, and creating markets for recovered materials. A total of 30 recipients from urban, rural, and suburban areas across Michigan will benefit, including projects targeting food waste (23% of the focus), plastics (10%), and other materials.
Grant recipients include organizations such as the Architectural Salvage Warehouse of Detroit, which will provide no-cost salvaged materials to low-income residents, and Chippin’ In, which will develop a program to process chip bags into warming kits for homeless communities. Other projects include efforts to recycle batteries, create eco-conscious wood products, and improve food waste collection and recycling.
The initiative aims to enhance Michigan’s recycling efforts and contribute to the state’s goal of a 30% recycling rate by 2029. The projects also support sustainability by reducing waste and carbon emissions, benefiting both Michigan’s economy and environment.
