Large scale food waste producers (over one ton of food waste a week) in Maryland have one more outlet to divert food waste. A large scale anaeerobic digestion facility is being built in Jessup Maryland that will be able to divert 125k tons of organic waste per a year from landfills and into compost. The effort is in response to a new law introduced this year in Maryland which requires large scale producers to divert food waste away from landfills (starting in 2023). Maryland based Coastal Sunbelt, a large scale processor of food has been sending its food waste to landfills because of a lack of options for the tons of waste it generates each year. This may be a positive example of a public/ private collaboration to alleviate problems of food waste. https://www.marylandmatters.org/2021/07/19/more-food-waste-in-md-will-be-diverted-as-a-large-anaerobic-digestion-facility-is-underway/
