On Super Bowl Sunday massive amounts of food have the potential to go to waste due to the Players Tailgate event held at the stadium. Fortunately, it is not just game day for the Chiefs and the Eagles, but also for the Food Recovery Network. The FRN is an organization that works to reduce food waste primarily on college campuses. However, this Sunday they will be at the Caesar’s Superdome in New Orleans. There, volunteers of the FRN are going to work to mitigate waste by collecting the food from the tailgate and giving it to the New Orleans Mission (shelter and recovery for the homeless). Last year, around 4,000 pounds of food were redirected to the Mission instead of being thrown out. They expect to see the same amount of food if not more this year. Thus, volunteers have already planned out the routes they must walk or drive during the collection of the food in order to work smoothly and efficiently, keeping the food safe and preserved at all stages of the process.
