An Elementary school in Rhode Island has been finding ways to reduce waste in the cafeteria. Instead of using single-use styrofoam trays they have switched to reusable trays. They used about 11.5 million trays previously, each year. There is also a new initiative that has students sort their food into recycling, compost, and liquid waste, versus trash. They also now have a refrigerator and table for unused/unopened food and drink so that those things don’t just get thrown out. With all these changes, food waste at the shcool has declined significantly from 6 garbage bags to 1 daily.
