Yes, your food waste could soon power your devices. Two Virginia Tech researchers are investigating how to convert food waste into rechargeable batteries. The researchers have found that fiber component in food waste could be used to make battery anodes. When making batteries there is a great reliance on graphite with is a limited resource. This could solve the sustainable energy issues for rechargeable batteries. For the next final two years the researchers will focus on trying to figure out how to make this feasible so that the market adopts this technology. A tremendous volume of energy is exhausted through food transportation and production so this will allow us to recover the energy that was lost through food waste.
