The ReFED U.S. Food Waste Report highlights the continued challenge of food waste in the US, despite growing momentum to address the issue. In 2023, $382 billion worth of food waste contributed to 4% of U.S. greenhouse gas emissions. While consumer food waste remains the largest contributor, businesses are also making progress with setting specific food waste reduction targets. The report suggests that a $16 billion annual investment in food waste solutions could generate a $60.8 billion return and significantly reduce waste. Key successes could also include a 25% reduction in unsold food by West Coast retailers and state-level food waste bills introduced in 2024. However, more action is needed to meet the 2030 goal of halving food waste in the US as shown in this article.
