Since beginning a food waste prevention program with Divert in June 2022, Giant Food has processed almost 80 million pounds of unsold food, offsetting 37,000 metric tons of greenhouse gas emissions. The program uses anaerobic digestion to turn garbage into soil amendments and renewable energy, as well as markdowns and contributions.

Furthermore, in 2024, Giant Food contributed more than 6.1 million pounds of food and supported local communities through initiatives like Fresh Food Recovery and Meat the Needs. In 2024, these initiatives and the Divert cooperation helped avoid more than 35 million pounds of food waste.

Initiatives to reduce food waste have also been introduced by other stores, such as Starbucks and Save Mart.
