For example, in France they have become the first country in the world to prohibit supermarkets from destroying excess foods. It is now law that they must communicate and cooperate with food rescue networks to redistribute all stock that still remains safe and edible. Companies found guilty of not partaking could be fined up to 10% of their annual revenue.
Peru have become the first country outside of Europe to mandate food donation, this change was sparked by the news that they are the largest food wasters in Latin America whilst 30% of their population find themselves being food insecure. They found that 60 to 70 tons of food waste is generated daily. The change had an immediate impact as donations to the Peruvian national food bank tripled in the year that the policy was enacted.
