The Park City Community Foundation (PCCF) launched the Zero Food Waste program in June 2024 to eliminate food waste from the Summit County landfill by 2030.
The initiative provides residents with special bins from Momentum Recycling to discard compostable items, which are then converted into natural gas or compost. This effort has already distributed 800 bins, saving the landfill approximately $100,000 and eliminating 18.1 tons of methane.
The program aims to double the landfill’s lifespan and has received the Smith’s Zero Waste Hero award for January. PCCF hopes to expand this initiative throughout the county and inspire other communities to adopt similar practices.
