Eugenia Dadzie, a PhD student in Biology at the University of Waterloo and co-founder of MetaCycler Bioinnovations, has been transforming dairy food waste into a new 100% biodegradable plastic. It all started as a research project and a collaboration with Fairlife. The Velocity startup produces polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHA) which is a biodegradable polymer by using the bacteria from dairy products. Extracting the PHA will allow pellets to be formed and given to plastic manufacturers to use. In two years, MetaCycler has received funding from United College’s GreenHouse Social Impact incubator. Dadzie and one of her co-founders are now students at the inaugural Entrepreneurial PhD Fellowship program at the Conrad School of Entrepreneurship and Business. Dadzie and her team of co-founders are stopping food waste and plastic pollution all in one.
