Smith Groceries launched the “ZERO HUNGER, ZERO WASTE” initiative to address unequal food distribution and mitigate food insecurity throughout the country. Last year, this program allowed Smith’s to donate 14 million meals. All the excess food in the store goes through a donation process so that it can go to those who truly need it. This example clearly debunks the myth that stores cannot donate food, because of expiry date laws. Smith’s Groceries is providing a clear example for other businesses to follow.
