Starting on January 1, 2022, the state of New York will mandate limitations on the amount of food waste to be sent to landfills. The Food Donations and Recycling law makes businesses that create at least 2 tons of waste per week to recycle scraps and donate extra food. Eight other states have already started regulating the amount of food waste in landfills. States are also offering tax incentives to businesses for donating their food. This may cost money for businesses at the beginning to afford transportation for waste or buying a biodigester, but it will help the community.
