This article explains how the misconceptions of food date labels cause a majority of food waste to happen in the US. A huge problem we are facing right now with food waste is the belief that the dates put on our food packages are telling us when we can no longer eat the food. These dates are put there by the retailers and manufactures to inform them more on when to sell the items rather than when they go “bad”. USDA estimates that 30% of food is wasted by the consumers and retailers. Governer Gavin Newsom has signed the Assembly Bill 660 which requires the food date language to change from “Use-By” to “Best if Used By” which will hopefully lessen the confusion between consumers and reduce the amount of food wasted by being thrown out because of made up dates. France has also followed suit by banning stores from throwing away their food when it approaches the “dates” and instead give the food to donations. We just need to hope the US and other countries can continue to pass laws to help reduce food waste and give more to our communities.
