Avery Dennison is launching brand new radio frequency identification (RFID) devices for fresh food categories including meats, baked goods, and produce. This technology will help by reading performance on densely stacked items in high-moisture, cold environments, like dairy and meat storage. It was found through research of global retailers that meat, produce, and baked goods were the most difficult to mitigate food waste. 51 percent of their retail respondents said overstocking was their leading contributor to food waste so they think this technology can help improve operational efficiency, enhance freshness, and reduce waste. If retailers are able to keep better track of inventory they would be able to reduce prices while reducing food waste, a win-win for everyone involved.
