Food waste prevention received some good news this week as the 2026 U.S. Food Waste Report was released. According to the data provided in the study, food waste in the country declined by 2.2%, which is actually the first time food waste in the U.S. has declined since the coronavirus pandemic. Most of the decline can be attributed to households because people tend to waste less food thanks to rising food prices and conscious meal preparation practices.
While this achievement is positive, it has also generated some concerns over its sustainability. People appear to have acted as they did due to an increase in the cost of food rather than from any heightened awareness. If the prices drop, food wastage may again increase. While there has been improvement, it remains fragile in light of possible future events.
