Loblaw, one of the biggest retailers in Canada, has taken several initiatives within its company trying to reduce food waste by 50% by 2025, and has far surpassed it by hitting 86% reduced food waste before then. Some of these initiatives include a product line that rescues misshapen and imperfect food and is sold at a lower cost, and the donation of surplus food to Canadians in need. They also have recycling initiatives for food waste, such as converting bakery waste into animal feed for farms and combining food waste with animal manure from a nearby zoo to make biogas, which is formed when organic matter decomposes, which is then used as renewable electricity. They have also worked to educate their customers on reducing food waste with resources such as documentaries informing them how they can be less wasteful. Having these initiatives pay off so well and quickly is incredible and shows what can be accomplished when food waste is taken seriously.
