Driven by a personal history of poverty and a 40-year career observing food waste in the food and beverage sector, Rick Chee established the Food Aid Foundation in 2013. For more than ten years, this Malaysian NGO has been actively fighting hunger by reclaiming and redistributing excess food. Instead of allowing perfectly edible but near-expiry or unsellable food to be discarded, the foundation collects it and delivers it to those facing food insecurity. To achieve this, the organization collaborates with major grocery stores, food manufacturers, and restaurant chains. Their efforts include rescuing fresh produce from markets and preparing cooked meals. Distribution efforts focus on People’s Housing Programme (PPR) flats in Kuala Lumpur and support for over 70 welfare homes. The Food Aid Foundation’s influence is widespread, covering the Klang Valley and extending to other states, where they also provide crucial emergency relief during events like floods. Chee stresses the necessity of educating children about food waste and emphasizes the urgency of taking action to minimize waste before it becomes unmanageable.
