Since June 2022, Giant Food has recognized their problems of their 80 million pounds of unsold food and how much waste is produced from their chain. In efforts to fix this issue, they partnered with Divert, a circular economy company to create a recycling program that helps process their waste into carbon-negative renewable energy. Their impact has offset 37,000 metric tons of greenhouse gas emissions which is equivalent to 8,630 gas-powered cars off the road. Not only are they trying to reduce food waste to help the environment, Giant brought back their Local Produce Boxes program that donated more than 6.1 million pounds of food in 2024. These efforts were sent through Meat the Needs Program and Fresh Food Recovery, along with local food recovery programs such as churches, soup kitchens and more making 5.1 million meals. With reprocessing their food waste and bringing back their donation program, Giant was able to prevent more than 35 million pounds of food from being wasted.
