Fayetteville, Arkansas is launching a new Residential Food Waste Collection Program to help reduce food waste sent to landfills. Starting next month, residents can sign up to receive a bucket for collecting food scraps, which will be picked up every two weeks and replaced with a clean one. A wide range of food waste is accepted, including cooked meats, bones, and processed foods, which are turned into nutrient-rich compost. The city tested the program last year, collecting 53,000 pounds of food waste from around 700 participants, showing its potential to reduce landfill use. Participation costs $15.90 per month and is added to residents’ utility bills.
While the program offers a convenient and effective way to divert food waste from landfills, the monthly cost may limit participation for some residents. Expanding outreach and considering affordability options could increase its overall impact.
