This SwissInfo Podcast episode examines why food waste remains a major challenge in Switzerland despite strong environmental policies. The podcast explains further how large amounts of food are lost across the entire food system – from farms and supermarkets to restaurants and households. However, households are the largest contributor of food waste. This is due to consumer habits like overbuying, misunderstanding date labels, and poor food planning.
Additionally, Switzerland produces millions of tons of food waste each year, much of which is still edible. This waste carries a heavy burden on the environment as it relates to water, energy, and land. All these environmental factors and others are necessary for food production.
Although Switzerland has committed to cutting food waste in half by 2030, experts in the podcast argue that progress has been slow. To meet this goal, stronger policies, long-term investment, and major behavioral changes will have to happen.
Based off this reading there were a few takeaways that stood out. One, being that consumer behavior must change. Through proper education on date labels, household food storage, and other food industry myths, households may become more conscious about how much food is being wasted. This could help create new up-cycled food channels to limit food waste and achieve the country’s overall goal. Another example is that government policies and economic incentives may be needed to change how citizens and industries view their habits and encourage them to start reducing food waste. When government institutions pass multiple laws on a topic, it signals the urgency and importance of that issue to the country as a whole. These initiatives, along with others, can significantly reduce food waste. While individual efforts matter, lasting change requires the involvement of the whole community; everyone must act as a change agent.
