French grocery retailer Carrefour is taking new steps towards decreasing their impact on wasted foods. Fragile products, like eggs, are subject to much higher levels of waste than more sturdy products like jugs of milk or cheese.
Typically, the retailer would discard any carton of eggs if even one of the eggs in the dozen was broken or cracked. This led to up to 3.5 million eggs being wasted annually, but Carrefour is offering a solution: loose eggs. The loose eggs are now being displayed on shelves and organized by how they were ‘reared’ allowing consumers to choose a variety of eggs for low prices. In just a few weeks of testing, the retailer was able to divert 13,000 boxes of eggs from going to waste. So, maybe we should to put all of our eggs in one basket….
