Summit County residents generate more than 7 pounds of waste per person daily, nearly double the national average, leading to concerns about the Three Mile Canyon landfill reaching capacity sooner than expected. In response, Recycle Utah has proposed a $25 million solution to increase waste diversion and recycling efforts. The plan includes building a 30,000-square-foot facility with advanced optical sorting technology capable of processing materials into 45 categories. Additionally, the proposal suggests establishing remote collection sites in Park City, Kamas, Kimball Junction, and Coalville to improve waste management across the county. These initiatives aim to increase the county’s current 12% waste diversion rate, which is below the national average of 32%, and address challenges posed by short-term rentals contributing to increased waste volume and improper disposal.
