Kansas City is home to a number of sustainability projects aimed at reducing food waste, three important ones were recently awarded a series of grants. The three recipients, the Unified Government of Wyandotte County and Kansas City, the Mid-America Regional Council, and the Kansas State University Pollution Prevention Institute, plan to implement a ‘three-pronged strategy’ to reduce local food waste before it is too late.
The plan includes a Regional Food Waste Reduction Action plan, a food mapping system, and an educational campaign for local citizens. A pillar of their plan and the EPAs is Sustainable Material Management(SMM). It is defined as ‘a systematic approach to using and reusing materials over their entire life cycles.’ The efforts in Kansas City hope to use SMM and create resources that are accessible to consumers for positive results that benefit not just those who participate but the community as a whole.
