Tesco, a major supermarket, is trialing a new “yellow sticker” system in some of its Express stores to reduce food waste. Under this system, food that is about to go out of date will be marked with a price of £0 and given away for free to customers who visit after 9:30 PM. This is a change from their usual practice of reducing prices by up to 90%.
The trial aims to ensure that unsold food is first offered to charities and staff before being made available to customers for free. As a result, Tesco has set a goal to halve food waste in its operations by 2025 and achieve net zero emissions.
