The Detroit Community Composting Collective Project (DCCCP), launched in summer 2025, was a community-driven effort that introduced composting to more than 100 Detroit households. It provided residents with equipment, training, and educational resources to turn food scraps into compost rather than discarding them. Led by a coalition of local food, waste, and environmental justice organizations, the project concluded its pilot phase in fall 2025. Its aim was to eliminate barriers to composting by providing essential tools and instruction in proper techniques. Organizers plan to analyze data and publish a comprehensive report in the spring, emphasizing that diverting food waste from landfills reduces methane emissions and improves soil health, benefiting gardens and urban farms. Supported by partners, including urban farms accepting food scraps and backyard and community-scale composters, the project attracted enthusiastic participants. Organizers hope this successful pilot will inspire broader community initiatives and motivate city officials to expand composting policies, fostering sustainable waste management in Detroit.
