The island of O’ahu in Hawaii plans to introduce a composting program this October to reduce food waste. Community members will be able to participate in a bi-weekly program at no additional cost. Similar to your normal trash or recycling pickups, green bins will be distributed by cities/counties and used for compost and food scrap collection. Currently making up 180,000 tons of their total waste stream, food waste can cause major issues, especially for small islands like O’ahu. By creating a composting program, they will be able to limit their overall waste significantly by reducing household food waste. Not only will this program limit waste by collection, but the city’s Department of Environmental Services will hold workshops educating community members on what types of food you can compost and why it is important.
