The City and County of Honolulu is taking a step toward its 2030 sustainability goals by launching the Green Recycling Organic Waste (GROW) program on April 1, 2026. With residential food scraps accounting for around 20% of Oahu’s waste stream, over 60,000 tons annually, this initiative allows residents to divert organic matter from landfills into curbside composting carts that are public avalible. By transforming scraps like meat, dairy, and produce into soil rather than methane-producing landfill waste, the program aims to reduce greenhouse gas emissions while preserving limited island landfill space for future generations.
