In 2015, the town of Colmar in France introduced an innovative program aimed at reducing food waste by providing residents with free chickens. Instead of throwing away kitchen scraps, residents were encouraged to feed them to the chickens, which in turn would produce fresh eggs. This not only helped cut down on waste but also provided a sustainable source of eggs for local households. More than 5,000 chickens have been distributed across the town. As a result, it’s estimated that 273.35 tons of food waste have been diverted from landfills.
The success of this initiative in Colmar has inspired other communities, and the program has since expanded to several towns in France and Belgium. The program fosters a sense of community and encourages people to take responsibility for their food consumption and waste management.
