A UK biotech company, Tropic Biosciences, has developed gene-edited bananas that stay fresh longer. Bananas spoil quickly, leading to billions being thrown away each year.

Using advanced gene-editing, Tropic slows the browning process by silencing a gene that causes bananas to overripen. This makes them last longer during shipping, storage, and at home. By keeping bananas fresher for longer, stores may throw away fewer spoiled fruits, and consumers will have more time to eat them before they go bad.

The innovation has been approved in the Philippines. If widely adopted, it could benefit farmers, retailers, and consumers while helping to lower the environmental impact of wasted food.
