During the first week of Ramadan in Johor, 3,223 tonnes of food waste were disposed of daily, equivalent to filling 1,289 Olympic-size swimming pools. This marks a decrease from 4,559 tonnes per day last year, attributed to the “Appreciate Food, Avoid Waste” campaign by SWCorp.

The campaign aims to reduce food waste in landfills, which produce methane gas, a potent greenhouse gas. The MySaveFood Ramadan 2024 program salvaged 3,265 kg of surplus food from 51 Ramadan bazaars last year, and 1,585.48 kg from 29 bazaars so far this year. Unsold food is distributed to mosques, university students, and uniformed personnel. Last year, the project collected 60,798.8 kg of surplus food from 147 bazaars across Malaysia.
